Star Wars Needs A New Director and Its A Good Thing?

Ding Dong The Director's Gone?

Along with the celebration of the 100 day count down till Star Wars: The Last Jedi, there was another announcement that seemed to get fans nearly as excited. Disney recently released this short but sweet statement that relieves the director of Star Wars episode 9.

“Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on ‘Star Wars: Episode IX,'” the statement said. “Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process, but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.”

But my question is why is this good news? Is it his most recent work directing The Book of Henry that received a 22% on rotten tomatoes. Well, I can imagine that may have added to it, but I think there is a underlying reason as to why fans are happy to see the director position open up. And that's because it makes every Star Wars fan ask a very attractive question. Who's going to direct the next Star Wars movie?

Fans have taken to twitter with a long list of suggestions, and despite how crazy twitter can be, some suggestions actually make sense. One of the more likely options Lucasfilm may pursue is simply having Rian Johnson direct Star Wars episode 9 after directing Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But as a fan I can't help but ask whether he's a good choice when we haven't even seen his most recent work.

Instead should we take this the same way many are seeing it, as an opportunity. An opportunity to bring in a director that add exactly what was missing in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a unique story line. Many loved the most recent addition to the Star Wars franchise, but one reoccurring issue people had was its similarities to A New Hope. So could a new director maybe help add to the over arching vision, or was it this very reason Colin Trevorrow was taken off the project to begin with. Does it even matter who's behind the camera when Disney is micromanaging their golden goose. I will leave you with one thought that might make things interesting. And that is, Guillermo del Toro has been in talks with Lucasfilm to direct his own branching films staring Jabba the hut. Maybe they can take him in to shoot episode 9 and even make use of his valued creative opinion in the process.

What do you think? What director would you like to see behind the camera?
